More about JOHN MIZELL

John Mizell I was born about 1690, probably in France. His father’s name is uncertain, but was possibly Joshua Mazell. John married Margaret, last name unknown. Assuming he was over 21 at the time, John was not recorded in the 1717 and 1721 tax lists of Chowan County, North Carolina. John’s first appearance in the American records was on the quit rents of the Chowan Precinct of Albemarle County, North Carolina for the period 1729-1732. John Measle was listed as owning 50 acres. This may indicate that he came to this country between 1721-32. John used the Measle spelling or some variant of his name frequently during his life. John Measles served as a juror on February 25, 1739 in Chowan County, North Carolina. John Measell was a witness in Bertie County, N.C. on December 9, 1742 to a deed involving Charles Richetts and George Hughes. John’s son John would marry Hughes’ daughter Sarah a few years later. In October 1743 John Meazles purchased land in Chowan County from John Keton.

John served on juries in January 1740 and 1745. He signed a petition in Chowan County in October 1740, requesting that road repairs be begun in Meherin Swamp, which indicates that is where he lived. In April 1747 in Chowan County, Margaret Meazel petitioned for administration of her husband John Meazel. On October 16, 1747, she and two men made bond so they could administer the estate. This was witnessed by Moses Mizell. She submitted an inventory of the estate on January 9, 1748. A petition for division of the estate of John Meassells was submitted that month. The estate was divided between the widow, John Meassells, Joseph Meassells, Moses Meassells, Aaron Meassells, Timothy Meassells, Jeremiah Meassells and Margaret Meassells. Margaret Mizel appears on the 1753 tax list of Chowan County.
